How to I become a member of Ashburton Community Garden?

Register your interest by completing the Contact Us form. The Plot Allocation Officer will contact you, take you on a tour of the garden, and give you an application form to complete.

The Plot Allocation Officer will inform the Management Committee of prospective members who will then vote on granting membership.

What is the eligibility criteria?

  • Membership is open to all residents of the City of Boroondara, 18 years and older.

  • A maximum of one plot is available per household.

  • People of all skills levels are encouraged to take part in gardening regardless of background, special needs or disabilities.

  • Those who live outside the City of Boroondara may apply to become members if there are spare plots available.

What are the fees?

Initial joining fee of $15 and an annual fee (currently $50) is required to secure a plot, as allocated by the Management Committee.

How are garden plots allocated?

Plots become available on an ad-hoc basis and from time to time there may be a waiting list. City of Boroondara residents are eligible to apply for a plot in the garden and a small number of plots are specifically allocated for residents of low-cost housing.

How big are the garden plots?

The garden has 46 plots, mostly of 12 square metres. Some plots are allocated for persons with mobility or access issues. 

Is the garden secure?

Yes, we have a full complement of gardening tools in a lockable shed. Each member is provided a compartment in the lockable shed for their personal garden equipment and materials.

Is there parking nearby?

Yes, parking is available on Markham Avenue. However parking may become limited on some evenings and weekends when sporting activities take place on Markham Reserve.

Are there any other facilities available?

A communal undercover area (pavilion) with kitchen facilities is provided to encourage community enjoyment.

What are my responsibilities?

The Plan of Management outlines your responsibilities for maintaining your plot and for participation in various maintenance activities in the garden.

When can I start gardening?

Gardening can start as long as the membership fee has been paid and an access code has been sent to you.
